Adaptive Reuse: Stella McCartney Exhibition

Project type

Retrofit

Date

December 2024

This environmentally conscious group project was a task involving the redevelopment of a listed, Old Portsmouth artillery storage building into an exhibition space for a sustainable fashion brand. Our choice to centre our project around the Stella McCartney brand was an attempt to promote the brands ethos for those who were not yet aware in a way that reflects both fashion and interior design as a whole. Our design told a story of the brands history by taking the user through an interactive timeline.

Our more conceptual idea for this particular project was derived from the ethical sourcing of feathers from different countries by the Stella McCartney brand. We took the bird flight maps from the countries in which the brand import materials from and used these shapes to inform our spatial strategies. This zig-zag formation was the guideline for our exhibition timeline. For the rest of the building, we reflected the brands core values within the materiality and overall atmosphere of the space by creating an organic environment.

This project was a great way to learn more about sustainability within both the fashion and design industry. It helped give me a better understanding around ethical materiality that is reflective of the brand we collaborated with.
