User centered design is an approach that focuses primarily on creating spaces that meet the needs and preferences of the users behaviours, needs and emotions felt in the space making a much more enjoyable space to use. It heavily emphasises empathy and puts the users at the forefront of the design process (Michael Marshal Design, 2017), this is why prototyping and iterative designs are so key in the design process of both the exterior and interior of any space. In the more modern day, when comparing traditional and contemporary design purposes, it is more common for spaces now to fulfill a user centered need rather than just a functional need. More consideration goes into the psychographic elements rather than just the demographics that are typically considered.Â
A great example of this being used is in Nicholas Grimshaw’s ‘Eden Project’. The design responds to users needs and experiences through layout flow, accessibility, educational activities and engagement/ interaction in order to create an immersive experience. The entire space ensures that visitors have an enjoyable experience whilst exploring the botanical gardens and simultaneously learning about the natural world. This architectural design has encapsulated user-centered design so well as it perfectly combines it with genuine skillful design that is visually appealing as well as purposeful; making the entire space both useful and beautiful. I believe this design demonstrates so clearly the way in which user-centered design principles can be applied to create spaces that prioritise the comfort and engagement of those who use it.
user-centered design is a concept not only used within building/ architectural design but also on the other end of the spectrum with digital design (Medium, 2023). Modern progressions like social media and the internet have become a much more user-centered dynamic. The term is very versatile and is used with many things but I believe that the impact and importance it has on architectural and interior design is a monumental development in the process of design.
