This week we began discussing and brainstorming potential concepts and began to find inspirations from lots of different aspects of design. As the beginning of the project is always a jumble of ideas that need to be refined and narrowed down, by putting together everyone's initial ideas, we are able to piece related thoughts together and develop ones we find most appropriate.

We based our inspiration of course on elements of sustainable and regenerative fashion as well as the brand we chose to work with, Stella McCartney. Some vague starting points we discussed are ideas such as:

  • Giving the users their own model runway

  • Projecting/ displaying a runway alongside the path through the exhibition

  • Reflecting the Stella McCartney timeline to our own exhibition layout

  • Using the words we found to encompass her brand to build the foundations of our design

By combining multiple perspectives, we are allowing our thoughts to become more and more developed and I find this is a great way to combat narrow mindedness when it comes to thinking of our own ideas.

A great way to spark inspiration is by seeing how other people have completed the same brief and that’s why exploring precedents is so crucial to the design process. As a class, we traveled to London to visit the Design Museum as well as the V&A Museum and I found it was incredibly helpful to actually visualise the way in which other fashion exhibitions are laid out and how a narrative is presented. It was very interesting to see the way the exhibition works in relation to the building and how both the interior and exterior are equally parts of the exhibition. From this visit, I will now have a much improved understanding of exhibition spaces as well as the sustainability aspect I am also working with.
